‘Such an interesting story’: Trump moves to declassify Amelia Earhart documents

TOPEKA (KSNT) – President Donald Trump has signaled his intentions to have documents related to the story of Amelia Earhart brought to light and shared with the public years after her mysterious disappearance.

Trump made the statement via a social media post shortly before 3:45 p.m. on Sept. 26. He said he is directing his administration to declassify and release all government records related to Earhart, who went missing under mysterious circumstances almost a century ago, due to high public interest in her story.

“I have been asked by many people about the life and times of Amelia Earhart, such an interesting story, and would I consider declassifying and releasing everything about her, in particular, her last, fatal flight! She was an Aviation Pioneer, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, and achieved many other Aviation “firsts.” She disappeared in the South Pacific while trying to become the first woman to fly around the World. Amelia made it almost three quarters around the World before she suddenly, and without notice, vanished, never to be seen again.”

Earhart was born in 1897 in Atchison, according to the Kansas Historical Society. She gained international fame for her flying abilities, later becoming the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean.

In 1937, she started a 29,000-mile flight around the equator alongside three others. Earhart and fellow crewmember Fred Noonan were last seen leaving New Guinea on July 2, 1937 as they flew to Howland Island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. To date, the remains of Earhart and Noonan have never been recovered and what happened to them is a mystery.
