On Friday afternoon, Brunswick County Schools in the southeastern corner of the state announced it will be closed to students “due to the threat of inclement weather.” The district said staff will receive information through their email and from their supervisors. Plans for Tuesday will be put out no later than 5 p.m. Monday, according to the system.
One county north in New Hanover County, school leaders there have not yet made a final decision on Monday’s schedule as of 4 p.m. Friday. According to New Hanover County Schools, the “most likely scenario” is for students to come in as normal and then be dismissed early, with all after school activities canceled. District officials said a full update will be put out over the weekend to families and staff.
The counties along the coast as well as other parts of North Carolina are expecting impacts from a system currently located in the Caribbean between Cuba and Haiti. The National Hurricane Center is expecting it to form into an organized storm over the weekend that would be named Imelda.
The timing of the storm’s formation could mean that it could be off the North Carolina or South Carolina by Monday afternoon, according to forecasters.
CBS 17 is keeping an eye on all tropical systems. Stay tuned for forecast updates throughout the weekend.
