CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — An in-cusody death early Friday morning is under investigation, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department reports.

Just after 3:30 a.m. on Sept. 26, CMPD officers stopped a vehicle reportedly without a license plate on Eastway Drive between The Plaza and E. Sugar Creek Road. Officers said they got probable cause to search the vehicle during the traffic stop.

The suspect was taken from his vehicle and put in the back of a patrol vehicle during the search. Officials said he had a medical episode while in the back of the cruiser. Officers gave first aid, and the Mecklenburg EMS Agency (Medic) was called to help.

The suspect was taken to a hospital, but was later pronounced dead. Because he was being detained at the time, this man’s passing is considered an in-custody death.

According to authorities, a search of the suspect’s vehicle found what is believed to be illegal narcotics.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is investigating the incident. CMPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau is also running a separate, but parallel investigation.
