FORT RILEY (KSNT) – A Kansas woman was sentenced to nearly 25 years in prison for the murder of her husband, a U.S. Army soldier at Fort Riley.

A federal jury earlier this year found Margaret E. Shafe, 31, guilty of murder in the second degree for shooting her husband, Greg Shafe,

in the face in February 2024. The murder took place in their home on the Fort Riley military installation and in the presence of two minor children.

Margaret Shafe was sentenced to 293 months, or just under 25 years, in prison on Sept. 26.

“Margaret Shafe deserves to go to prison,” said U.S. Attorney Ryan A. Kriegshauser. “The Court heard brave testimony from Ms. Shafe’s own daughter who witnessed her mother shoot her stepfather in a fury.”

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Department of Army Criminal Investigation Division and the Fort Riley Fire and Emergency Services.
