Bailey Martin, spokesperson for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (MDPS), said officers received a call on Friday about an incident at the Dollar General on Woodrow Wilson Avenue. They said the suspect had been spotted by a security guard on the grounds of the Jackson Medical Mall.
The suspect fled the scene, passing a Capitol police officer in a gray Nissan Altima. Martin said the chase ensued west on Bowling Street and Northside Drive, before the suspect traveled east on Highway 49.
Officers discovered the vehicle had struck a structure near a sharp curve on Joe Coker Road before continuing south on Lanewood Drive in Hinds County. Martin said the suspect lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a ditch.
The driver was identified as Malik Devontae Miller, 25, and taken into custody. AMR evaluated him at the scene, and he was transported to the Hinds County Detention Center on the charges of felony fleeing and shoplifting.
