IMPD: Second arrest made after video shows triple shooting along Georgetown road
Police and prosecutors agree that the case illustrates a daily public safety challenge that was captured on dramatic surveillance video. That video showed two men unleashing a volley of gunfire, nearly 50 rounds in a matter of seconds.
The shooting wounded three people Saturday night near 56th and Georgetown. Court records now claim 19-year-old Harold Love Jr. and 21-year-old Carlos Contreras used guns equipped with machine gun conversion devices to commit the violence.
“You got to see how dangerous that type of gun with a machine gun conversion device is and the decimation it can do so quickly,” said IMPD officer Tommy Thompson.
While Carlos Contreras was arrested just minutes after the shooting, police believe Love Jr. fled the scene in a blue Jeep SUV.
According to previous reports, Contreras reportedly shot three people in the parking lot near a Jimmy John’s location in the 5600 block of Georgetown Road and fled from police in a Dodge Challenger. During the chase, the Challenger reportedly got stuck on a set of railroad tracks near the intersection of Industrial Boulevard and Guion Road.
Police believe Love Jr. and Contreras belong to a group called the Wick City Threat and previously posted a picture together on Instagram of Love Jr. holding a handgun equipped with a machine gun conversion device.
Prosecutors released the surveillance video of the shooting this week to show how machine gun conversion devices pose a huge public safety risk. In addition to the wounded victims, multiple cars were also damaged by the gunfire.
“The amount of danger these firearms pose to people in the community is significant,” said Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears this week.
“Absolutely, we want to take away these machine gun conversion devices because they are so lethal and they are federally illegal to have. You can’t possess them,” said Thompson. “We want to remove that threat to our community and keep Indianapolis safe.”
On Thursday, Love Jr. was taken into custody with the assistance of IMPD specialty units. Love Jr. was preliminarily charged with:
While Contreras was arrested just minutes after the shooting, prosecutors believe Love Jr. fled the scene in a blue Jeep.
This week, detectives tracked Love Jr.’s phone to his home.
After serving a search warrant at Love Jr.’s home, police allegedly found various drugs and guns. This caused the following preliminary charges to be added:
Love Jr.’s father, Willie Lewis and a woman named Ciara Miller were also arrested for drug and weapons charges. IMPD officials said that the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case and make a final charging decision for Love Jr., Miller and Lewis.
Contreras continues to be held on an $800,000 bond.
