Caution advised for drivers as Louisiana sugarcane harvest begins

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — People are warned to travel with caution in areas, as more equipment will be on the roads for the Louisiana sugarcane harvest season.

The Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office said the harvest season is scheduled to start on or around Tuesday, Sept. 30, for the area. Deputies said people can expect to see industrial equipment and tractors on highways from early mornings to late afternoons.

According to the American Sugar Cane League, Louisiana farmers grow sugarcane on over 530,000 acres of land in 25 parishes, producing around 20% of the sugar grown in the nation and making a $2.3 billion economic impact in the state.
