Students at Brown Upper Elementary School can now walk to and from school safely, thanks to a new sidewalk that has been put in place.
“So each day in the morning and the evening, we supervise students as they walk across through our playground to the other side so that students have a safe entering and exit of the school,” Said principal Tessa Flournoy
The Webster Parish School Maintenance Fund and the school board funded this project.
Superintendent Johnny Rowland says that after several conversations on behalf of the school board, they were able to come to an agreement to welcome the project.
“Everyone realized that with the buses coming in, with the car riders coming in along with the walkers coming in to campus at virtually the same time of day every day and leaving at the same time every day that if we could minimize the congestion that was occurring over on Patterson, which is a mean to my to the south right here that it would be best,” Superintendent, Webster parish school board, Johnny Rowland.
Community advocates for the crosswalk say “Our main goal was to think about the safety of all students that are walking,” said community activist for citizens about progress, Terrell Mendenhall.
The project was completed just before the start of the school year in August.
Superintendent Rowland says for years, parents worried about children walking along the road to get home.
Now, these sidewalks give families peace of mind and children have a safe place to walk.
