MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — A Thursday night house fire on Sharon Drive left a 5-year-old boy dead, according to the Mobile Police Department.

MPD officials said firefighters with the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department were called to a house fire in the 1500 block of Sharon Drive around 11:50 p.m. on Sept. 25.

When firefighters arrived, they found that two children were home alone when the fire started — a 12-year-old and a 5-year-old.

Officials said the 12-year-old made it out of the home safely after a smoke detector and the smell of smoke awakened him.

The 12-year-old attempted to get his 5-year-old brother out of the home, but due to the rapid spread of the fire, he was unable to, according to officials.

Firefighters were able to get to the 5-year-old, and he was taken to a local hospital; however, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

MPD officials said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
