The Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Office said one person was killed Wednesday morning and another was saved from a burning vehicle.
The crash occured around 6:24 a.m. when two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision near Mudgett Township. One driver, a 24-year-old man, was able to call 911, stating his back hurt, and he was trapped in his vehicle, and that one of the vehicles was on fire.
When the first responder arrived, they found a 2015 Toyota Camry fully engulfed in flames and a person being moved away from a 2004 Lincoln Navigator, which was “very heavily damaged,” according to the sheriff’s office.
Moments later, authorities reported the second vehicle was also completely engulfed.
The driver of the Camry, 53-year-old Rachael Marie Morey of Rush City, was found dead inside her vehicle.
According to the sheriff’s office, before first responders arrived, three good Samaritans came upon the crash. Using fire extinguishers and a construction cut-off saw, the three worked to try and put out the fire in the second vehicle. When the fire could not be put out, they attempted to use the saw to break into the car to get the driver out.
The group was able to break the car’s window and get the driver away from danger.
After getting away from the car, the driver was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.
The sheriff’s office said the trio likely rescued the driver moments before the car would have overtaken the entire vehicle and said their actions most likely saved him from death or serious injury.
The crash remains under investigation.
