According to the Unified Police Department, on Sept. 23, at 11:13 a.m., they were contacted to perform a welfare check near 7500 South Jefferson Street in Midvale. An employer reported that they were unable to contact an employee who had missed work.
When officers arrived, they found that both vehicles were present at the residence, the home appeared “undisturbed,” and that the doors and windows were closed and locked. Police spoke with neighbors, friends, and co-workers, and were able to obtain a key and enter the residence.
Inside, two individuals were found deceased. They have been identified as Eilleen Lyon, 65, and Terry Lyon, 63.
The Unified Police Department stated that the investigation indicates that Eilleen Lyon, the female victim, sustained a gunshot wound, while Terry Lyon, the male victim, appears to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The crime is believed to be a murder-suicide.
There were no other occupants at the residence, and police say there is no threat to the public. The Unified Police Department previously stated that there was no known history of domestic violence at the residence.
Detectives from their Violent Crimes Unit and Forensics Unit conducted an extensive on-scene investigation, the police department says. They are currently working with the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner to confirm additional information.
Police are also interviewing those close to the victim and the suspect to learn more.
“This is a heartbreaking situation, and our thoughts are with the family, friends, and co-workers affected by this tragedy. We are committed to conducting a thorough investigation to provide answers and closure,” the Unified Police Department stated in a press release.
