RIVERTON, Utah (
ABC4) — The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) announced it will be reopening travel on Bangerter Highway near 13400 South in Riverton, which has been under construction for nearly a year.
This is the latest development in a decade-long project to remove stoplights from Bangerter Highway in favor of freeway-style interchanges. By removing traffic signals, UDOT hopes to reduce travel times and congestion and improve safety on one of Utah’s most used highways.
“Getting 13400 South open in both directions gives people back valuable time in their day,” UDOT Region Two Director Robert Stewart said. “It’s another step in making Bangerter Highway a reliable, connected route for the whole southwest valley.”
Between Friday, Sept. 26, at 10 p.m. and Monday, Sept. 29, at 5 a.m., crews will close eastbound travel on 13400 South from Old Liberty Way to the intersection of Bangerter Highway and 13400 South for final prep work for the reopening.
This closure will also prevent eastbound 13400 South drivers from using the on-ramp to southbound Bangerter Highway. Drivers will be detoured onto Old Liberty Way.
On the same weekend, crews will also shift traffic onto the new interchange at 2700 West in Bluffdale, giving drivers one less stoplight to wait at.
In July, UDOT finished installing new pavement beneath the new interchange at 13400 South.
East and westbound travel at 13400 South will also restore important business connections along Bangerter Highway, a main corridor linking destinations such as Mountain View Village, Jordan Landing, The District and Salt Lake City International Airport.
Once 4700 South, 9800 South, 13400 South and 2700 West interchanges are complete, Bangerter Highway will be an entirely free-flowing highway from the intersection of Interstate 15 in Draper to 4100 South in West Valley City.
