BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — September 24, 2025
Monroe County sheriff’s deputies and the Bloomington Police Department’s Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) took a man into custody Wednesday evening after a standoff that lasted several hours on the city’s south side.
According to a news release from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched around 3:05 p.m. to a residence on South Bernard Drive after receiving notification of a court order for a mental health emergency detention.
When deputies arrived, they observed the individual and what appeared to be a firearm near him, the release said. The man refused to exit the residence, had no phone to use, and would not communicate with officers in any way.
Deputies established a perimeter and obtained a warrant to enter the home. After more than three hours of attempting to communicate with the individual without success, the Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from Bloomington police’s CIRT team at 6:21 p.m.
The specialized unit arrived and used its tactics to take the individual into custody at 8:53 p.m., the release said. He was then transferred to deputies, who transported him to IU Health Bloomington Hospital in accordance with the court order.
No injuries were reported.
