ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Police are encouraging the public to use tap-to-pay among a surge of card skimmers found at businesses in Abilene.

At least two skimmers were discovered at gas stations on Barrow and S 14th Streets this week.

“These devices are placed on point-of-sale terminals at registers or fuel pumps and are designed to capture credit and debit card information,” a press release from the Abilene Police Department explains.

To avoid falling victim to these skimmers, police are advising customers to use tap-to-pay and other contactless pay methods because swiping and inserting cards are more vulnerable to skimming attacks.

Consumers are also encouraged to check their bank statements regularly for fraudulent activity and to report any charges that are unauthorized.

Businesses and customers who find card skimmers are asked to contact the Abilene Police Department.

An investigation is still underway into all card skimmers that were discovered recently.
