NJPAC Announces 14th TD James Moody Jazz Festival With Over 20 Events Across Newark

Newark’s premier arts venue will host its 14th TD James Moody Jazz Festival this November. The two-week music celebration runs from the 8th through the 23rd, spreading across multiple city locations.

“This is going to be another all-star, can’t-miss TD James Moody Jazz Festival,” said Christian McBride, festival advisor and GRAMMY Award-winning bassist, according to Black Star News.

Music giants fill the stage roster. Arturo Sandoval brings his trumpet magic, while Stanley Clarke shows off his bass skills. Savion Glover’s tap rhythms mix with Carlos Varela and Jackson Browne’s melodies. Christian McBride teams up with Andra Day, as José James and Ledisi add their voices to the mix. The yearly Represent! show brings hip-hop royalty Chuck D, Rakim, and Slick Rick to town.

NJPAC President John Scheiber spoke about musical partnerships. “Jazz has always been an art form that’s strengthened by artists collaborating, crossing boundaries, finding new inspiration in the counterpoint of different rhythms coming together,” said Scheiber.

Opening night splits between two spots. The George Cables Trio starts things off at Bethany Baptist Church, while Omar Sosa Quarteto Americanos takes over NJPAC’s Victoria Theater. Shows spread across Newark’s cultural spots: from the main NJPAC stages to intimate sets at the Public Library and Clement’s Place.

TD Bank marks its 14th year backing the festival. Martin Melilli, TD Bank Commercial Market President, points to their long-standing support: “TD Bank has been an active supporter of the festival since it began, sponsoring free community performances and educational events.”

The final day packs a double punch. Nat Adderley Jr. Quartet plays Dorthaan’s Place Sunday Jazz Brunch, while fresh voices compete in the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition. Winners take home $5,000 and a shot at stardom.

Music fills the city’s spaces for free too. Library branches host Jazz in the Stacks, while Clement’s Place opens its doors for Jazz Jams. TD Bank customers get special festival deals.

Want to catch a show? Tickets start at no cost and top out at $79. Book through NJPAC.org/jazz or call the box office. Check the website for the complete lineup and show times.
