Lockdown lifted at Belmont Middle School after threat call traced to juvenile in New York: Police
BELMONT, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Belmont Middle School was placed on lockdown Thursday morning after getting a threatening phone call from an unknown suspect, later believed to be a juvenile located in New York, Belmont Police announced.

The threat came in around 8:30 a.m., prompting a lockdown. Law enforcement from Belmont and surrounding areas responded to secure the school and search the area.

As a precaution, nearby schools were also advised to enter “secure mode” while the investigation was underway, Belmont Police said.

During the lockdown, Belmont Police traced the call. Detectives said they determined that the suspect was likely a juvenile in New York and maintained the lockdown until authorities there confirmed the individual’s identity and location.

“We understand that these incidents are a parent’s worst nightmare; our children attend Belmont schools as well. We appreciate your patience as we do our best to keep you informed in a timely manner, but our top priority is the safety of our students,” Belmont Police said in a released statement.

As of Thursday afternoon, police confirmed there was no active threat on campus. The lockdown has since been lifted, and classes have resumed.

Parents were told that they could pick up their children using the standard check-out process. South Point Baptist Church on Horsley Avenue had been designated as a temporary reunification site, Belmont Police said. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
