The “Gold Star Family Remembrance Ceremony” is an annual event, meant to honor the families of those killed during active duty service.
The event started in 2022, and dozens of federal and local Kansas lawmakers were in attendance for this year’s ceremony.
Families received golden flowers, meant to represent their lose loved ones. We spoke with Governor Laura Kelly, who believes it’s an incredibly important ceremony.
“Life is hard enough when you’re in the military, but then to lose your spouse or your brother, your uncle is incredibly hard,” Governor Kelly said. “I think it’s so important that we not only not forget those who actually died but we remember those who were left behind. That’s what we’re doing here.”
Karen Funcheon, a mother who lost her son while he was serving in the military, tells us that the event means a lot to her.
“I always appreciate it when people honor our son,” Funcheon said. “It’s been 18 years, and I just never want him to be forgotten.”
Governor Kelly tells us that she intends to host the event once again next year.
