The sheriff’s office said on Wednesday, Sept. 24, that deputies had taken over two dozen reports of theft and vandalism in the past week and a half.
On Sept. 22, detectives began collecting physical evidence of stolen and vandalized brass vases from area scrap yards. According to court documents, they’d been stolen from gravesites.
The next day, deputies arrested Tomas Bernardo, Gaven Carayoan, Jesse Barcinas, and Joseph Mendiloa. They were charged with violating graves and theft by unlawful taking.
“The desecration of graves is among the most disturbing crimes we could encounter, and it strikes at the heart of our community’s values. I want to commend our Detective unit for their outstanding work in swiftly identifying the suspect and making arrests in this case. Their expertise and dedication reflect the very best of law enforcement and I want to assure our citizens that we will continue working tirelessly until every individual responsible is held accountable,” Sheriff John Ward wrote.
The investigation is ongoing, and the four men remain in the Hardin County Detention Center.
