Rita made landfall as a Category 3 storm 20 years ago near the Texas-Louisiana border, impacting southwest Louisiana residents’ homes and businesses.
“Louisianians endured extraordinary suffering during Hurricane Rita, but they also showed unmatched courage and resilience,” Landry said. “Twenty years later, we honor those whose lives were forever changed, remember the victims, and honor the spirit of Louisiana that endures through every storm.”
Landry’s order proclaimed Sept. 24, 2025, as Hurricane Remembrance Day, ordered flags at half-staff at the State Capitol and state buildings from sunrise to sunset and asked residents to join him and First Lady Sharon Landry in a day of prayer.
