A Minneapolis man was charged via warrant this week in connection with an incident on the University of Minnesota campus last week, in which shots were fired near Rapson Hall.
Anas Mursal Mohamed, 18, was charged Tuesday with one count each of threats of violence, second-degree riot and discharge of a dangerous weapon, in addition to two counts of illegally possessing a firearm.
Last Thursday, officers from the university’s police department responded to the area of Rapson Hall on a report of shots being fired. The criminal complaint notes that at the time, an event was taking place with hundreds of people in attendance inside the hall.
Officers who arrived on the scene reported seeing many people in a panic and running in all directions, according to court records. Witnesses told law enforcement that the suspect fired a gun outside and ran into the building.
The complaint states that police later found two discharged cartridge casings on the sidewalk.
Surveillance video shows Mohamed arriving in the area and parking a vehicle in a campus parking ramp before firing a gun twice outside the hall, the complaint states.
The complaint added that Mohamed was arrested on Sept. 19 after police stopped him while he was driving the same vehicle he allegedly parked in the ramp prior to the incident.
