TriMet service cuts are coming. How will it impact your bus, MAX line?

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – TriMet is facing a budget shortfall, and the agency says the loss in revenue will soon have an impact on its service lines.

Bus and MAX service cuts will begin in November 2025 and are expected again in March 2026, but TriMet warns that more cuts are to be expected in the future.

“After years of rising costs and less money coming in from fares, our expenses are now greater than our revenues,” TriMet said. “So far, we’ve been able to cover this budget gap with our reserves. But that money will run out. To ensure TriMet continues delivering safe, reliable and convenient service into the future, we’re taking action now to match our expenses with our revenues.”

The service cuts come in addition to previously planned administrative cuts in an effort to reduce spending at the agency.

“Service cuts are always our last resort, but by reducing spending now, we avoid more severe cuts down the road, which would affect many more riders,” TriMet said. “We know you depend on us. Unfortunately, without additional state funding and other revenue, service cuts are necessary to balance our budget and keep TriMet financially sound.”

TriMet said more details about the March cuts will be available in January 2026.

Larger cuts with “more significant reductions” are expected to take place in November 2026 and again in December 2027. Riders interested in sharing their input are encouraged to fill out TriMet’s survey.
