Stop putting cones in front of your house, San Bruno PD tells residents

(KRON) — Many of San Bruno’s residential streets are public, which means, anyone can park their car on them. Police said some residents, however, have been using cones and garbage cans as personal “reserved” parking signs.

On Tuesday, the San Bruno Police Department wrote a message to the community reminding homeowners that it’s unlawful to block off access to street parking.

SBPD wrote, “About those cones and garbage cans … we understand parking in the city is limited and finding a spot can feel like winning the lottery. But here’s the deal. Public streets are for everyone. Blocking off parking isn’t just inconsiderate — it’s not allowed.”

Cans should only be placed on a curb the night before, or morning of, garbage truck trash collections. “Think of it this way: cones belong at construction sites, and garbage cans belong at the curb on trash day — not in the middle of the street guarding your favorite space,” the police department wrote on Facebook.

The Facebook post racked up more than 150 responses. One resident replied, “I pretty much have a collection of cones in the back of my pickup truck. The only way I don’t park somewhere is when there’s a no parking sign with a date and time. Somebody put clones out. I pick them up and throw them in the back of my truck. Doing my part to keep San Bruno clean.”

Another San Bruno resident replied, “Definitely need parking permits in San Bruno now. It’s an all out war on my street these days! Lots of entitled people. The new neighbor next door blocks her parking with garbage cans every week. People park in the middle here where 2 cars can fit. They hit our cars! It’s ridiculous! Please implement a system. I grew up in this small town things changed for the worst.”
