PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A man was arrested Wednesday after exposing himself to a family in a parking lot before firing gunshots at their vehicle, Salem police said.

Just after midnight Wednesday, officers responded to a report of a confrontation followed by a shooting in a parking lot on Silverton Road near Hawthorne Avenue Northeast.

According to police, witnesses reported that a man – later identified as 53-year-old Jeffrey Holland – exposed himself to a woman and her family while they were sitting in their vehicle.

Authorities said Holland then started banging on the vehicle’s windows, before returning to his nearby shop, grabbing a rifle, then firing gunshots at the vehicle as it drove away.

The woman then called 911 and reported that she and her family were being chased by a truck while they left the area, officials said.

The dispatcher connected the call to a responding patrol officer to allow for accurate updates from the caller about her current location, officials said, noting this helped officers quickly find the victim and stop the truck from following her.

Holland was arrested and jailed for unlawful use of a weapon, menacing, reckless endangering, public indecency and interfering with a peace officer.

Officers later found multiple rifle casings on the scene, while detectives wrote a search warrant for Holland’s shop, where police found two rifles.

The investigation is ongoing.
