Puppy saved from drowning after man fleeing police crashes into golf course pond: Madison Co. Sheriff

ANDERSON, Ind. — A puppy is on the mend after almost drowning in a golf course pond.

According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, the young animal was an unwilling participant in a police chase as 38-year-old Steven Gray of Markleville tried to evade sheriff’s deputies in his Dodge pickup on Monday afternoon.

Officers were after Gray due to him having felony warrants for his arrest. Gray fled from police and kicked off a chase that involved him driving through Meadowbrook Golf Course.

Gray reportedly caused thousands of dollars in damage to the golf course during the pursuit. The chase ended when Gray’s pickup careened airborne before crashing into a small pond and submerging in the water.

Gray was able to escape the pickup where police waiting at the shore took him into custody.

Deputies had no idea a puppy had been in the truck until it was spotted desperately trying to swim to shore. The animal was “clearly in distress,” according to the sheriff’s department, but managed to paddle to the bank where police snatched it up.

Puppy recovered by Madison County Sheriff’s Dept.

The animal was taken to Middletown Animal Hospital, where its condition is improving. The sheriff’s department said employees are making personal donations to pay for the puppy’s recovery.

Gray is currently being held in Madison County Jail on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement, possession of a syringe, animal neglect, reckless driving and criminal mischief. He was wanted on a parole violation out of Boone County.

The sheriff’s department said anyone wanting to help their own animal in need can make donations for animal medical expenses to the Animal Protection League.
