OPELOUSAS, la. (KLFY) — Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser and
Louisiana Main Street are awarding funding to 12 Louisiana main street communities, including Opelousas, to support downtown growth initiatives.
Gretchen Erlingson with Opelousas Main Street said the funding will enable Opelousas Main Street to undertake crucial projects such as sidewalk improvements on Market Street and the installation of wheelchair-accessible ramps in city parks.
“This is giving us an opportunity to reach out to the people of Opelousas so that we can do future planning,” Erlingson said.
The funding from Louisiana Main Street is complemented by the Thriving Communities Program from the Department of Transportation, which together provide a substantial boost for local infrastructure projects.
Opelousas Main Street is actively engaging the community by setting up bulletin boards around town to gather input on what residents would like to see in their downtown area.
“We’re setting up a bulletin board around town asking people what they want in their downtown, what they would like to see, what would bring them downtown,” Erlingson said.
The community’s ideas will be further explored during the ‘Imagine Main Street’ workshops scheduled for Oct. 21 at the Opelousas Civic Center, where residents can contribute to the visioning process for downtown development.
Erlingson emphasized the importance of these workshops, stating, “We’ll be inviting the public in to take this information that we’ve been gathering over the last few weeks, and drill down and maybe make some recommendations on how to accomplish that.”
The funding and community engagement efforts are expected to significantly enhance the downtown area of Opelousas, fostering a more accessible and vibrant community space.
