COLUMBIA, S.C. (WSPA) – Former South Carolina State Representative Robert John (RJ) May III represented himself in federal court today.

May filed several motions, including tossing evidence that can be used against him and a request to relocate his trial out of Columbia. The judge deferred all rulings until Wednesday.

May faces 10 federal counts of distributing child sexual abuse material. He was investigated last year because of an account on the messaging app “Kik” that is allegedly tied to May’s home, phone, and IP address. Prosecutors said the account, using the alias “joebidennnn69,” uploaded and exchanged hundreds of illicit videos known as child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The Government also point to logs showing the account accessed his home Wi-Fi network hundreds of times.

During the hearing, May challenged the validity of the search warrant of his home and phone. He also mentioned the affidavit and testimony from Investigator Britton Lorenzon, accusing Lorenzon of inconsistency between her affidavit and testimony during his detention hearing, regarding whether suspects typically delete child sexual abuse material.

May objected to several pieces of evidence prosecutors plan to use, arguing they are unfairly prejudicial. Prosecutors countered that these items are essential to proving May’s identity and the chain of control over devices and accounts. The Prosecutors are trying to prove that May is connected to ‘joebidennnn69’ and another alias they said was used for distributing CSAM: ‘Eric Rentling’.

The judge said she will hear full argument on the change-of-venue motion and issue decisions on the others on Wednesday.

May is representing himself, but Wednesday he asked the judge for clarification on what his public defenders can or can’t do. The Judge said he can use them for procedural clarifications and ask if they can be a communication system between the prosecution and himself when needed.

May’s trial is scheduled for October 9, with jury selection beginning October 8.
