Chemical explosion reported at London business

LONDON, Ky. (FOX 56) — The London Fire Department responded to a chemical explosion at an area business on Wednesday.

The London-Laurel Rescue Squad announced on Facebook that the explosion was reported around 7:09 a.m. on Highway 80.

In a release around 9:30 a.m., the London Police Department confirmed that fire units were called to the explosion and were quickly able to get the scene under control before initiating decontamination efforts.

LFD said it also helped with hospital decontamination procedures to help ensure anyone potentially exposed received proper treatment and protection.

Hobie Daugherty, the public affairs officer for LPD, confirmed that an acid sanitizer known as Hyperflex was involved in the explosion. Hyperflex contains phosphoric acid and nitric acid, which are corrosive and can cause significant health effects with direct contact.

Daugherty said that no life-threatening injuries have been reported at this time.
