Caught on video: Undocumented man detained at San Jose nonprofit
The arrest occurred after immigration officers attempted to detain the man at an immigration check-in facility on Blossom Hill the previous day. His wife was detained and released shortly after the initial attempt.
Rose Amador, CEO of ConXion to Community, described the arrest as jarring and stated, “One of our clients did everything, sat down to eat, and someone in plain clothes said he had a warrant for this person’s arrest and said he was a fugitive and took him away.”
The couple lives in San Jose with their three children, according to Amador.
ConXion serves undocumented families and provides various services to the community in San Jose.
Councilmember Peter Ortiz has been vocal about the rise in immigration crackdowns across the country. He has called for ICE agents to identify themselves when operating in San Jose.
Ortiz’s office released a statement condemning the incident, stating, “This incident represents a deeply troubling intrusion into a community space that has served as a trusted safe haven for immigrant workers for decades.”
Amador emphasized that her staff would take legal precautions to ensure the safety of their clients, saying, “We’re going to take whatever precautions we need to, legally of course, to make sure our clients are safe.”
City leaders are planning to speak out against the arrest in a public statement on Wednesday morning, highlighting the ongoing concerns over immigration enforcement practices in community spaces.
