Today, the Utah County Commission approve a contract to appoint Attorney Kathryn Nester to represent Tyler Robinson, who was charged after allegedly shooting Charlie Kirk.
Robinson was formally charged on September 15. he was charged with aggravated murder with the victim targeting enhancement, which is a capital felony, and violent offense committed in the presence of a child aggravating factor.
The Utah County District Attorney Jeff Gray issued a Notice of Intent to Seek the Death Penalty as well.
Reportedly, Tyler Robinson’s case could be very complex, because it involves the death penalty. Previously, Craig Stanger, a criminal defense lawyer at Stowell Crayk, told ABC4 why it could take time.
“You have to get someone who is capital certified; only certain attorneys have those qualifications. So, there might be a little exchange in time to get counsel on board and get them the discovery,” Stanger said.
Stanger says death penalty cases are complex and can take time to move through the courts.
“I think what we’re going to see is a lot of scheduling-type hearings, disclosure of discovery, maybe the state asking for more time, or the defense needing time to review evidence and speak with Robinson at the jail,” Stanger added.
Kathryn Nester was approved unanimously by the Utah County Commission.
Additionally, her law firm, the Nester-Lewis firm have dealt with high profile cases before. Nester-Lewis represented Kouri Richins, who was charged with murder after allegedly killing her husband and then writing a children’s book about grief.
