WATCH: First responders rescue senior dog trapped in mud in St. George
ST. GEORGE, Utah (ABC4) — St. George Police Animal Services officers recently worked together with St. George Fire Department to rescue a senior dog who was trapped in the mud.
St. George Police Department Animal Services Supervisor Cathy Freitas told ABC4 that they received a call from a citizen that a dog was stuck in the mud at the Fort Pearce Wash. Officer Davis with animal services responded, with the help of the caller in locating the dog.

“She tried getting it out of the mud by herself, but every time she would start to walk towards the dog, she would also sink in the mud, and so it became a little bit sketchy for her,” Freitas described.

Freitas said that they wound up calling the St. George Fire Department to assist. “They came out with their backboards and you know, long boards that they could lay down and walk over to reach the dog and pull the dog out of the mud. She was stuck pretty good!” she said.
The dog was not a stray. According to Freitas, she had gotten out, and because she’s a senior dog with a bit of dementia, she got lost.

Freitas praised her team and the fire department. “Officer Davis did an amazing job. She kept her wits about her, she knew what she was capable of, and then when she realized she couldn’t reach the dog, she reached out for help, which is awesome. I love that our departments, our fire department and police department, could work together like that to rescue the dog,” she said.
After the dog was rescued, St. George Animal Shelter posted that the dog was found, and the owner saw and was able to pick their dog back up.
