Texas A&M fraternity involved in reported hazing incident

BRAZOS COUNTY, Texas (FOX 44) – A Texas A&M fraternity is involved in a reported hazing incident under investigation by the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office and the university’s Police Department.

The Brazos County Sheriff’s Office received a report on Sunday regarding a possible hazing incident involving the Kappa Sigma Fraternity in the 10400 block of North Dowling Road.

Preliminary information indicates that on Sept. 14, a group of prospective new members (pledges) of the fraternity were instructed to attend an event at the off-campus fraternity property. Members reportedly brought the pledges to a secluded area where they were told to engage in physical activity until exhaustion. At least one participant later sought medical treatment for injuries sustained during the event.

The Sheriff’s Office says this investigation has revealed there might be additional victims or witnesses. It is actively investigating this matter and has notified the Texas A&M University’s Police Department of the investigation.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Sgt. Trey Oldham at Toldham@brazoscountytx.gov or Investigator David Grissom at DGrissom@brazoscountytx.gov, or can call the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office at 979-361-4900.

In addition, the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office and Texas A&M Police Department are encouraging the community to help prevent hazing by following these tips:

• Be aware of the definition of hazing, as well as federal, state, local laws, and University rules and policies.

• Recognize the warning signs of anyone pressuring participation in activities for organizational membership.

• Refuse to participate in any unsafe activity that puts your health or dignity in jeopardy.

• Report concerning behavior or activity to local law enforcement immediately.

• Join with other new members to refuse to be hazed.
