MUNCIE, Ind. — The Hull Property Group confirmed plans to demolish 250,000 square feet of the Muncie Mall.

John Mulherin, vice president of the Hull Property Group, said this accounts for roughly one-third of the existing mall — which currently boasts a square footage of 638,000 feet. The areas earmarked for demolition include the old JCPenney, Sears and movie theater.

According to Muhlherin, the demolition will open up parcels along McGalliard Road, allowing for new development on the property while almost increasing the amount of outward facing shops still located within the mall.

This reduction is part of a larger trend in malls across the United States, Mulherin said, and not a reflection of Muncie itself.

Demolition, beginning with interior work, is slated to begin in October. The demolition will cost approximately $2.5 million, according to Mulherin.
