‘Prank’: No charges after doll hung near election sign
STATESVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The Statesville Police Department has identified the person responsible for tying a doll to a signpost near a campaign sign for Councilwoman Doris Allison, and says it was not intended as a threat or hate crime.
Using surveillance from the area, officers were able to track several vehicles seen passing by the intersection of Wilson Lee Boulevard and Fayetteville Avenue on September 15. Investigators found a witness who gave a detailed description of the man seen tying the doll to the post.
That led police to a nearby home, where they located a 23-year-old man who admitted he was the one who put the doll there. According to Statesville PD, he told them it was meant to be a Halloween prank and that it had nothing to do with the election sign for Allison.
On September 23, Councilwoman Doris Allison met with the man. Police said he apologized for his actions. After reviewing the case, Statesville Police said there will be no charges filed.
FBI assists Statesville Police with the case
The discovery of the doll sparked concern in the community and led to an investigation involving both the Statesville Police and the FBI. Some believed the doll, which was found hanging by a rope, was meant as an attack on Councilwoman Allison.
At the time, a nearby property owner told officers they believed the doll was placed intentionally to target the councilwoman and described it as a potential hate crime.
Authorities are no longer seeking information in this case.
