CONCORD, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS)
— We’re learning more about a serious crash that shut down Interstate 85 South in Concord during Tuesday morning’s rush hour.

According to Trooper Efird with NC State Highway Patrol, a Honda Accord rear-ended a tractor-trailer at high speed around 8:16 a.m. near Exit 55 in Cabarrus County.

Both vehicles were traveling southbound in lane three and had slowed for traffic ahead when the crash happened, Efird said.

Troopers said the Honda slammed into the back of the tractor-trailer and became wedged underneath it. The driver of the Honda suffered significant injuries and had to be airlifted to CMC Main for emergency care. Their current condition has not been released.

A medical helicopter landed on the interstate to transport the injured driver, and all four southbound lanes of I-85 were temporarily closed.

The interstate was fully reopened at 9:45 a.m. Traffic in the area has since started to clear, but authorities are still urging drivers to stay alert and cautious.

This is a Developing Story. Check back for updates
