INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis man has been sentenced for his role in a counterfeit temporary license plate scheme that involved creating and selling fake interim tags on Facebook Marketplace.

According to a news release, Kal Hall was sentenced to 545 days of home confinement after he was convicted of counterfeiting, which is a level 6 felony. This follows a separate 545-day sentence in the Department of Corrections for an unrelated case where Hall pled guilty to Strangulation (Level

6 Felony), Criminal Confinement (Level 6 Felony) and Domestic Battery (Level 6 Felony).

The Secretary of State’s Auto Dealer Services Division led the investigation into Hall, uncovering evidence that he created fake interim tags on his computer before listing them for sale on Facebook Marketplace. These tags would sell for prices ranging between $25 and $50.

Investigators made contact with Hall by creating a fake Facebook account that proceeded to purchase one of the advertised tags. As the investigation unfolded, subpoenas revealed many more similar transactions that were documented via Cash App.

Indiana State Police also assisted in the investigation to bring criminal charges against Hall.
