Huntington High School band prepares for a busy competition season

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – The Huntington High School band is gearing up for a busy and competitive season under the leadership of band director Dr. Roderick Jefferson.

The Raiders will travel to four major competitions this fall, including Cedar Hill, Texas, on October 4, Carroll’s Battle of the Bands in Monroe, Peabody’s Battle of the Bands in Alexandria, and the highly anticipated LMEA State Marching Championships at McNeese State University in Lake Charles on November 4.

Dr. Jefferson says the state competition is especially significant, with bands from across Louisiana competing for the top title in the HBCU-style “High Stepping Division.” But moving a 125-piece marching band comes at a cost. The school is looking to raise at least $10,000 to cover travel expenses.

Huntington’s band will also perform at a New Orleans Pelicans halftime show in February and take part in Mardi Gras festivities, continuing to represent Shreveport on big stages.

Community members can help by donating directly to Huntington High School at 6801 Raspberry Lane, Shreveport, LA 71129, care of the Huntington Band. A Double Good Popcorn fundraiser will also launch this Wednesday, with details to be shared soon.
