Felony theft convict receives 77-month sentence for gun possession

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — A Rockford man has been sentenced to spend more than six years in federal prison for the illegal possession of a firearm.

Wesley Smith, 37, has multiple felony theft convictions on his record and was legally prohibited from owning a firearm.

Yet, in May 2024, police found a loaded gun at his home.

Smith pleaded guilty to the charge earlier this year. On Monday, U.S. District Judge Iain Johnston sentenced Smith to 77 months in prison.
