CLEARFIELD, Utah (ABC4) — A Clearfield house fire took the life of a dog and destroyed a family’s belongings.

On Sunday morning, Octavia Reed received a call from her mom alerting her that their home was on fire. Neither Octavia nor her mother, Marissa, were home. Only their two dogs were at the residence at that time.

When Octavia arrived at the home, the fire department told her that one of her dogs had died in the fire. The dog was five years old.

“I just started freaking out,” Octavia said.

The two dogs were best friends. Octavia said that the surviving dog is not coping well with the loss.

“I am just so mad that it happened because I left and I could have been there to save my dog,” Octavia said.

Marissa said that Kush was a good dog. He tried to go out the front door, because he knew that was where the exit was, but no one was home to save him. Marrissa said her kids are struggling with the loss.

‘We have nothing. Everything is gone’

Mark Becraft, Fire Chief for the North Davis Fire District, told ABC4 that the fire started on the back deck, but the cause is still under investigation.

Marissa said that her and Octavia lost nearly everything that they own in the fire. From sofas, beds, clothing, and shoes, the two are in need of the bare essentials.

“I’m just looking for some help to, obviously, start over,” Marissa said.

Octavia said that right now, her and her mother are trying to figure things out— like where they are going to sleep. Additionally, Octavia lost her school laptop and is trying to figure out how to do her schoolwork.

“Be grateful for what you have, because at any second, you could lose it all.” Marissa said.

Those who are able can donate to the Reed’s through their GoFundMe.
