Sheriff: Illegal immigrant had BAC of .244 at time of fatal Stephenon County crash

STEPHENSON COUNTY, Ill. (WTVO) — The undocumeted man from Guatemala who the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office says caused a fatal DUI crash in August had a blood alcohol-concent (BAC) of more than three times the legal limit, the office reported Monday.

According to a news release, 30-year-old Rolando Ico-Choc had a BAC of .244 when the Nissan Altima he was driving crossed the centerline on Aug. 9 and struck a Ford Edge driven by 61-year-old Darcy Connolly-Brunner on llinois Route 26 North near Oneco Road in Orangeville.

The crash occured just after noon. Both drivers were killed.

No alcohol was detected in Connolly-Brunner’s system, the sheriff’s office reported.

Darcy Connolly-Brunner was the mother of Freeport Aquin basketball standout Sophie Brunner, who went on to play at Arizona State and in the WNBA.

The crash drew harsh criticism from area Republicans and shed light on the the Illinois TRUST Act.

“I hold JB Prizker personally responsible,” Rep. John Cabello (R-Machesney Park) said in an earlier report. “I hold the Democrats personally responsible. A life was taken by someone who shouldn’t have been here.”

The TRUST Act ended cash bail in Illinois and prevents local police agencies from enforcing federal immigration law. Ico-Choc, a multiple DUI offender was known to the Department of Homeland Security.
