Police chase ends in crash, loaded gun found in suspect’s car

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — A man attempting to escape arrest was caught Friday after crashing into another vehicle in Rockford.

According to the Rockford Police Department, officers with the Specialized Community Oriented Policing Enforcement (SCOPE) team observed a vehicle that had previously fled from officers near Rockford Avenue and Crosby Street.

When police officers got behind the car, the driver, Dontavion Horton, 33, accelerated, disregarded a stop sign, and crashed into another car.

Horton was arrested at the scene, and police said a loaded handgun was found in the car.

He is charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, unlawful possession of a weapon by a repeat offender, no valid Firearm Owners Identification, traffic offenses, and an outstanding warrant for his arrest.
