According to the Rockford Police Department, officers with the Specialized Community Oriented Policing Enforcement (SCOPE) team observed a vehicle that had previously fled from officers near Rockford Avenue and Crosby Street.
When police officers got behind the car, the driver, Dontavion Horton, 33, accelerated, disregarded a stop sign, and crashed into another car.
Horton was arrested at the scene, and police said a loaded handgun was found in the car.
He is charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, unlawful possession of a weapon by a repeat offender, no valid Firearm Owners Identification, traffic offenses, and an outstanding warrant for his arrest.
