Louisiana State Police issue emergency declaration after Smitty's explosion
Troopers reported a chemical release, fire and explosion in Roseland on Friday, Aug. 22, resulting in a mandatory evacuation order in the area. The fire caused heavy black smoke to reportedly land on nearby homes, businesses and schools and even cause problems for farmers nearby.
The declaration took effect at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21, and will remain in effect until 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 4.
“This declaration provides exemptions from certain Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Parts 390–399) for carriers providing direct assistance in Louisiana, including essential services such as power restoration, delivery of groceries, fuel, propane, and waste removal,” according to the Louisiana Motor Transport Association.
“Please note this does not exempt carriers from controlled substance and alcohol testing, CDL requirements, financial responsibility rules, hazardous materials regulations, or Louisiana size, weight, and traffic safety laws,” officials said.
