“Words cannot describe the love, light, and laughter Jayce Saint Bakari Edwards brought to our lives,” the family wrote. “His bright eyes, long lashes, and warm smile melted the hearts of everyone he met.”
Jayce was remembered as a joyful and loving child, his grandmother’s biggest helper, his baby brother’s protector, and the “official family comedian.”
“We would be doing the world a disservice if we did not celebrate Jayce’s genuine spirit and love for all,” the message continues. “If you are able, please consider donating to help cover relocation expenses and to support his grandmother as she continues to care for Jayce’s three other brothers, Josiah, Johan, and Jahseh. Your support, love, and generosity mean more than words can describe.”
The family expressed appreciation for the outpouring of condolences, prayers, and support from friends, neighbors, and even strangers across the country.
Tragedy in Steele Creek
Jayce’s life was cut short in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Sept. 17, during an attempted car theft outside his home on Cigar Court.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said a group of suspects tried to steal a Dodge Charger parked outside the house around 6 a.m. Gunfire broke out during the incident, and a bullet struck the home, killing Jayce while he slept.
Authorities launched an investigation, and four suspects have now been arrested and charged with first-degree murder:
- Marquise Geurrier, 24
- Angelo Hudson, 20
- Jordon Davis, 23
- Anthony Abel, 18
The suspects were reportedly using multiple stolen vehicles, including a Dodge Durango, which police said was used during the attempted theft. Hudson later confessed to being involved, telling investigators he heard gunfire coming from “someone inside the Durango.
Police said surveillance footage and a multi-agency effort helped track down the suspects. The fourth suspect, Abel, was arrested in Raleigh and is awaiting extradition to Mecklenburg County.
Their cases are due back in court this October.
Honoring Jayce
As CMPD continues working to bring justice for Jayce, the Charlotte community is standing behind the family he leaves behind, including his grandmother and brothers.
The GoFundMe campaign states that donations will help the family with relocation costs and support ongoing care for the boys.
