3 suspects arrested after gunshots fired hit NC school bus mirror: Greensboro police

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Three people have been arrested after a shooting that led to a stray bullet striking the mirror of a school bus in Greensboro on Friday.

Shortly before 3 p.m. on Friday, shots were fired near the intersection of East Cone Boulevard and North Elm Street, according to a statement released by the Greensboro Police Department.

Assistant Chief Ric Alston said during a Saturday news conference that the shooting was the result of “some type of disorder that occurred between several individuals” that began near the intersection of East Cone Boulevard and Summit Avenue before moving to the intersection of East Cone Boulevard and North Elm Street.

No injuries were reported. However, Guilford County Schools confirmed that a stray bullet struck the mirror of a Doris Henderson Newcomers School bus.

Three suspects were arrested within about two and a half hours of the shooting, Alston said. Officers also found the firearm that they believe was used in the shooting.

Joshua Isaac Fountain (Guilford County Sheriff’s Office)

Joshua Isaac Fountain, 27, is charged with discharging a firearm into occupied property, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, assault on a school employee/volunteer, conspiracy and discharging firearms in city limits.

Marvin Waters, 22, is charged with discharging a firearm into occupied property, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, assault on a school employee/volunteer, conspiracy and discharging firearms in city limits, as well as failure to appear on felony charges and failure to appear on misdemeanor charges.

Malik Justin Sampson, 24, is charged with discharging a firearm into occupied property, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, assault on a school employee/volunteer, conspiracy and discharging firearms in city limits.

Alston says more charges may be coming.

Investigators believe the people involved knew each other and that this was not a random incident. The people involved were not connected to any Guilford County school.

“Me being a parent myself, that’s very alarming that a school bus could be hit by gunfire through reckless behavior of individuals,” Alston said. “We are looking at a situation where you have individuals with a firearm that’s irresponsible and choose to discharge that firearm with blatant disregard for public safety.”

Page High School and Cone Elementary School were put on lockdown in response to the shooting, according to a statement released by Guilford County Schools on Friday afternoon.

The school district’s full statement is provided below:

This afternoon, Page and Cone Elementary were placed on lockdown in response to a shooting nearby. No students were injured; however, the mirror of a bus serving Doris Henderson Newcomers was struck by a stray bullet. Law enforcement will be at and around both schools to assist with dismissal. We are grateful for our staff and law enforcement partners who worked quickly to ensure students were safe.
