Drought conditions continue to worsen in northern Arkansas, southern Missouri
After a record setting first six months of the year rainfall wise in the Twin Lakes area, the last few months have quickly turned dry and drought conditions have continued to worsen.
The U.S. Drought Monitor’s weekly report shows a large part of northern Arkansas and southern Missouri is in severe drought. The area of severe drought has expanded from last week’s maps.
In northern Arkansas, all of Fulton and Izard counties were already in severe drought. This week, most of Baxter, Stone and part of Marion counties are now shown with severe drought. The rest of Baxter, Stone, Marion and most of Boone and Searcy counties are in moderate drought. Newton County is shown as abnormally dry.
In southern Missouri, Ozark, Douglas, Howell and Taney counties are all listed in severe drought.
The Missouri Bootheel and extreme northeast Arkansas are now showing extreme drought for the first time this year.
Through June 30, 43.21 inches of rain was recorded at the KTLO, Classic Hits and The Boot studios in Mountain Home, the official reporting station for the National Weather Service in Mountain Home. That is the most rain to ever fall in Mountain Home for the first six months of the year.
Since that date, only 6.79″ of rain has been recorded.
