Wesley Wright Pulls Name from Shelby County Commissioner Race

Former Lakeland Commissioner, Wesley Wright, has officially announced that he will not pursue a campaign for Shelby County Commission District 3, citing his decision to prioritize family during what he described as “a season that is foundational” for his children. Mr. Wright had previously announced his attention to run earler this summer.

District 3 covers Lakeland, Bartlett, and surrounding communities, including Brunswick south of the Loosahatchie River. The primary election is scheduled for May 5, 2026. Candidates can begin picking up petitions Dec. 22, with a qualifying deadline of Feb. 19. Early voting will run April 15–30.

In a public statement released on September 17, Wright shared that the choice came after “careful reflection and heartfelt conversations” with his family and prayerful consideration. He emphasized that being fully present for his children outweighed the demands of launching a political campaign at this time.

“To everyone across District 3 who has supported me, thank you,” Wright wrote. “Your encouragement, belief in my vision, and unwavering commitment have meant more to me and my family than words can express. I have been truly humbled by your kindness, your conversations, and your willingness to stand alongside me.”

“While my leadership and public service will continue outside of elected office, my dedication to grassroots involvement remains unwavering,” Wright said. “I believe true impact begins at the community level, and I will stay actively engaged listening, serving, and working alongside others to drive meaningful change from the ground up.”
