SALT LAKE CITY (
ABC4) — Happy weekend, Utah! It’s the last weekend of summer and while temperatures will be close to season norms statewide, parts of Utah are looking at scattered to isolated thunderstorms and showers.
Moisture is surging north throughout the Beehive state meaning Saturday morning will allow for partly cloudy to mostly cloudy skies. Average daytime highs this time of year are the upper 70s in Salt Lake City and low 90s in St. George. Saturday temperatures make it to the low 80s along the Wasatch Front, 70s in our mountain valleys like the Wasatch Back, a range of 70s throughout central Utah and upper 80s and low 90s in Washington County. By Sunday, temperatures will be slightly cooler along the Wasatch Front with uppers 70s to low 80s, and low 90s throughout Washington County.
Storms and showers begin in Northern Utah on Saturday morning and expanding Saturday afternoon. Why? Moisture continues to surge north with our SW flow. This moisture potential is above average for this time of year and linked to a trough to our west. The trough is going to lift NE as we make it through the weekend, and in doing so, it will provide atmospheric lift to an already moist environment. This will result in an unsettled weekend for the Wasatch Front with scattered storms Saturday and isolated storms possible Sunday. Lingering moisture and another disturbance leaves scattered storm potential in Northern Utah for Monday, but a drier pattern will set up by Monday evening. Autumn officially starts Monday so a few storms with the low 80s in Northern Utah and low 90s in Washington County with drier conditions to kick off the season!
The bottom line? Moisture surging north will allow for scattered storms Saturday in Northern Utah, with isolated storms Sunday. Southern Utah will see a drying trend and seasonal temperatures.
