Qualifiers for the ‘Super Bowl of Masonry’ come to West Jordan

WEST JORDAN, Utah (ABC4) — The world’s largest masonry challenge has come to West Jordan Utah.

“AI cannot do this,” Michael Kohut, the regional manager for Interstate Brick said during Friday’s event. “What they’re trying to show the future [generations] is if you work hard and you do it right, you have job protection.”

The SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 was hosted in Utah Friday. Masons from across the region competed for the title of “Utah’s Best Bricklayer.”

The series kicked off at Interstate Brick in West Jordan Friday at 10 a.m. The event is one of over 20 qualifying series held across North America.

“The bricklaying battle is designed to test the speed, skill, and stamina of each participant by challenging them to build the highest and best 26-foot-long brick wall in one hour, with as few craftsmanship errors as possible,” organizers said in a press release.

“Bragging rights is probably the biggest for these guys,” Kohut added.

The mason with the highest brick count at the end of judging earns a spot to compete in the 2026 World Championship, affectionately known as the “Super Bowl of Masonry,” in Las Vegas in January of next year. Winners receive over 5,000 in prizes including a new Silverado truck, Kubota RTV, and power tools, among others.

“Bricklaying is one of the oldest trades that we have available to us in the United States and around the world,” Kohut told ABC4.

The SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 was established in 2003 with the goal of showcasing the skill and passion of masons in North America. Since its beginnings as a friendly competition, the series has bloomed into a source of workforce development.

“This country was built on brick,” Kohut said. “We want to actually highlight the fact that this is a very skilled trade.”
