MH City Council approves ordinances for commercial building facades, landscaping

The Mountain Home City Council approved two ordinances Thursday night, one updating zoning regulations for commercial building facades and the other updating landscaping regulations, after discussing them the previous two meetings.

One of the big changes for commercial building facades is allowing visible fasteners to be used which had previously been banned. Any denials by the Planning and Engineering Department can be appealed to the Planning Commission.

The landscape ordinance replaces the list of banned plants and instead has a link to a list of invasive plants identified by The University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture which cannot be planted.

The old ordinance requires a minimum of three feet of landscaping along the front and sides of the building. The new ordinance requires landscaping features to be incorporated into building sides that require a facade.

The council voted to waive competitive bidding and sell a tract of land adjacent to the Dr. Ray Stahl Soccer Complex to Arctic Heating and Cooling for $5,000. The city doesn’t use the land and the business plans to use it to build a shed for storage.

The council also voted to levy a 2-mill property tax for the city of Mountain Home for forthcoming year. It’s not a new tax, but the same as this year and a procedural ordinance for the county collector’s books.
