The call to action by Sarah Adlakha follows the Trump administration’s possible troop deployments beyond Washington, D.C.
Jackson’s homicide rate was above 77 per 100,000 people in 2024, which is the highest in the United States among cities of comparable population. As of September 18, 2025, police said there have been 41 homicides in Jackson this year. This is down from 85 this time last year.
Adlakha said the Jackson Police Department (JPD) is doing everything they can with about 275 officers, but they cannot do it alone.
“When your house is on fire, you can’t rebuild it. And right now, Jackson is still on fire, so something needs to be done. There’s an urgency to this situation. But I think it’s great that we have a new mayor who’s willing to work with bipartisanship across the aisle to help rebuild Jackson. But right now, there’s an urgency that just can’t wait,” she said.
Adlakha called on state leaders, including her primary opponent, U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), to stand with Trump’s law-and-order agenda.
Gov. Tate Reeves (R-Miss.) previously noted that Capitol police are already helping secure Jackson.
WJTV 12 News reached out to Hyde-Smith’s Office for comment. As of publication, we have not heard back.
