Pelosi declines to vote on bill proclaiming Charlie Kirk a ‘patriot’

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi was present but did not vote Friday on a bill honoring slain right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk as a patriot. Pelosi, according to House records, was on the floor Friday and voted on several other bills.

However, records indicate that the former Speaker of the House did not vote on House Resolution 719. The bill, which honored “the life and legacy” of Kirk, passed the House with 310 members, including most Republicans, voting in favor. Fifty-eight Democratic members voted against the bill, while 38 other members voted present.

Pelosi was one of 26 members — 4 Republicans and 22 Democrats — who declined to vote.

In 2022, when a conspiracy theorist armed with a hammer broke into her San Francisco home and attacked her husband, Kirk went on his podcast and called for a “patriot” to bail out the assailant.

“And why is he still in jail? Why has he not been bailed out? By the way, if some amazing patriot out there in San Francisco or the Bay Area wants to be a midterm hero, someone should go and bail this guy out… Bail him out and then go ask him some questions,” Kirk said on his podcast.

On the podcast, Kirk qualified his comments, saying he thought the attack on Pelosi’s husband Paul Pelosi was “awful.”

The assailant in the attack, David DePape, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on a family member of a federal official.

During his trial, DePape said he was motivated by right-wing conspiracy theories, including those espoused by the QAnon movement.
